David Cannon

David Cannon recently retired after 33 years in education. His career spanned all grade levels: elementary, middle school, high school and collegiate. He taught in Michigan and Illinois before coming back to his hometown of St. Louis.

Mr. Cannon held leadership positions as the Vocal Jazz Chair on both the District and State levels in Illinois where he taught for 13 years. In his last 15 years, David was the Director of Choral Music Activities at Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Missouri. He is a published arranger (UNC Jazz Press), clinician, adjudicator and festival conductor in both the concert and jazz arenas.

David began his musical career as an oboe major at UMKC while also playing guitar in the UMKC Jazz Band. Also at UMKC, he played guitar for and then sang in Dr. Kirby Shaw’s vocal jazz group “Connection”.  Under Kirby’s tutelage, David realized his calling to teach vocal music. Transferring to Millikin University to major in Choral Education, he founded and directed the second vocal jazz ensemble as an undergraduate. He was a vocalist and Assistant Director of the internationally award-winning Gold Company at Western Michigan University as a graduate student under Dr. Steve Zegree. As a professional vocalist, David has recorded and performed in several ensembles. Most notably, the a cappella group Back to Back, winning the Midwest Harmony Sweepstakes Competition and placing 2nd in the national competition of the same name.

David Cannon’s choirs have gained national attention, performing at the 2006 Central Division ACDA conference in Chicago. His ensembles were also recognized by Downbeat magazine where they were voted "Winner-Best Vocal Jazz Ensemble in the United States" in their annual Student Music Awards Competition for a total of 6 times. He most recently directed the 2014 Illinois All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble at the annual IMEA conference in Peoria, Illinois.

Over the years, David and his ensembles have been privileged to share the stage with The New York Voices, Take 6, Janis Siegel of the Manhattan Transfer and Bobby McFerrin. Mr. Cannon is excited to share his passions with this year’s Missouri All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

Note: MCDA does not offer refunds in the event the student cannot attend.

For safety reasons, all rehearsals are closed to the public. Only those who are official chaperones or registered members of the conference (including single day registration) are allowed in the rehearsal space. Please help us maintain the safety of our singers by adhering to these requirements.

For liability reasons, members are not supposed to be official chaperones. But in the event that there was no other option, members still need to register for the conference. Thank you for supporting the organization that supports these ensembles!
